Homeworking: 5 tips for managing work-life balance
One of the main benefits of telecommuting is greater flexibility. But with that flexibility sometimes comes great pressure. If you work unusual hours or don't have the opportunity to interact with your colleagues every day, you may feel pressured to work than you would in the office.
In this article, we offer some useful tips for managing work-life balance while working from home.
#1 Set a schedule
When you have the ability to work from anywhere, it can feel like you have to be available all the time. By setting a schedule, your team will know exactly when they can and cannot reach you, and you can plan your personal activities outside of work, while still working a reasonable number of hours.
#2 Take productive breaks
One of the benefits of being able to work remotely is greater productivity. That said, the loneliness of working remotely can sometimes feel like you don't have a minute to yourself when you're working.
You can then run personal errands to break up your day when you need to get away from your desk for a few minutes. This way, you can take breaks that will remain productive and help you accomplish your personal tasks.
#3 Plan your afterworks
When practicing homeworking, it can be difficult to truly get away from work at the end of the day. Whether it's having a drink with a friend or going to the gym, having a place to go after work will make you more likely to disconnect and stop working.
#4 Develop a routine
Developing your own routine will help you stay more consistent and focused on your work, and you'll also be able to spend time with your family.
If you're an early riser, try to get a few chores done before the kids wake up. This will allow you to have a quality breakfast with them before they leave for school. Part of balancing family life is making memories with your loved ones wherever you are.
#5 Set boundaries between work and family
It's impossible to balance work and family life without setting boundaries. They help protect your work from family distractions, as well as protect your family from work obligations.
For example, you can agree with your family that no one is allowed to use a cell phone at the dinner table. By setting this limit, you'll avoid work-related disruptions during your dinner, and you'll be able to enjoy real family time.
