Profile: Yuma Food
How about crackers for the planet? This is the challenge launched by Yuma Food, an organic and Belgian brand that offers healthy and tasty products made with cricket flour.
The brand
Yuma innovates by making cricket flour products available, a promising food alternative for feeding the people of tomorrow.
The aim is to make cricket commonplace by gradually introducing healthy and tasty products in which cricket is processed into flour, so as not to scare consumers. Later on, Yuma will offer a range of products in which the cricket will become more and more substantial.
The story
Gabrielle Wittock is the founder of Yuma. She is 25 years old and has been studying edible insects and their benefits for our health and environment for four years. As a vegetarian, she places great importance on environmental conservation and animal welfare.
It all started five years ago when she worked on a cricket farm in Brussels. Since then, she has been eating them regularly to ensure her protein and vitamin B12 intake. Today, she is convinced that crickets will become an integral part of our plates.
The values
For years now, the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) has been promoting this food alternative in our countries. Knowing that by 2050 we will need twice as much food as we do now, it is obvious that we need to find other protein sources that have a lower environmental impact than meat.
And cricket is just such a food! Not only does it taste deliciously nutty compared to other animal protein sources, but it's a win-win... Gabrielle understood the importance of changing our diet and the potential of cricket. She surrounded herself with the best experts to create the Yuma brand.
The products
Yuma is on a mission to gently introduce crickets into our daily diet. To begin with, the brand offers a range of three delicious crackers produced by craftsmen in Brussels, which are available either in bulk or in bags in shops.
At Wello Life, we've already adopted them for our summer drinks!
