Alternative food: crickets on your plate
Why eat crickets?
For ecology
We know that by 2050 humanity will need twice as much food as it does today and that most food production systems are hugely polluting our planet.
For example, to obtain the same amount of protein, farmed crickets require on average 15 times less space than farmed beef, consume 25 times less food, emit 60 times less greenhouse gases and use 2000 times less water. So the choice is quickly made!
For ethics
Unlike the mammals we are used to eating, the cricket is naturally cavernous. Caverni what?! It actually likes to live in small dark places with its fellow creatures. Its natural living space is therefore very easy to reproduce in a farm. In some farms (e.g. the one where Yuma operates), the crickets are harvested at the end of their natural life cycle, by cooling down, which means that they go to sleep before they die.
For people who limit themselves to plant-based diets to replace their animal proteins, it is important to know that each time plants are harvested, the crop removes a lot of insects. In this case, the insects are not consumed but simply killed in order to eat the crop. We can therefore observe that more and more vegetarians are considering cricket meal as a serious alternative to animal proteins from traditional meat, whether it be for their health, the environmental impact or the respect of what they eat.
For our health
Cricket is a real nutritional bomb! A simple teaspoon of cricket flour is enough to replace the proteins found in a 100g beef steak. And these proteins are more easily assimilated by the human body because they are complete proteins. They are superior in quality to those of soya or spirulina and contain the amino acids essential to human needs.
In addition to proteins, flour also contains very high levels of: zinc, iron, magnesium and calcium. And the natural origin of these minerals guarantees a very high rate of assimilation for an optimal strengthening of our immunity.
There are also more than 10 different vitamins in cricket meal, the most abundant of which is vitamin B12. This vitamin is essential to our physical and psychological health and is only found in meat.
How to eat crickets?
The advantage is that cricket flour can be used in any preparation, sweet or savoury, heated or not. It can easily be stored for months, which makes it very easy to consume. Not to mention that its nutty flavour goes perfectly with a wide range of gourmet preparations. It's a simple way to add health to your cooking.
In conclusion, everything about cricket is good: its taste, its lower environmental impact and its incredible nutritional values. It is the superfood that wins on all counts and can be perfectly introduced into our diet!
